Chess is more than just a fun activity. In more than 30 countries around the world, chess has being incorporated into lesson time and is part of the curriculum because of the benefits it brings to pupil learning. Several studies show that chess teaches creative thinking, problem solving, concentration, critical thinking, comprehension skills, spatial skills, numerical abilities and administrative-directional abilities, as well as increasing memory, reading skills and verbal aptitudes. From our own experience here at Pinelands High School, our 2007 dux, Ebrahim Hoosen, was a chess player, and he was rated in the top 10 in the province for Maths. Contrary to what many think, chess is also a team sport, thereby developing social skills, fostering team spirit, developing a competitive edge and teaching learners how to lose graciously.
Chess is once again a growing sport at Pinelands, with an enthusiastic group of learners. Coaching is offered and there are also computer programmes available to the chess club members in the computer lab for further practice and enjoyment. Regular friendlies (1st term), fixtures (2nd and 3rd terms) and tournaments are held against other local schools, with our teams holding their own against the opposition. There are also two trophies that are awarded at the end of each year for successful chess players.
Wouldn't you like to exercise your brain, develop all these skills, improve your marks at school and still have loads of fun at the same time? Don't worry if you don't know how to play - we will teach you! We look forward to welcoming you to the club.
