Pinelands High offers its learners the unique experience of participating in a Rainbow Camp.
In 1999, the school ran the first Rainbow Camp, which developed from the desire to create a vision for Pinelands High learners of the new South Africa, and their identity within a newly emerging democracy. In essence, Rainbow Camps deal with the issues of bias and prejudice, and encourages learners to look at who they are, and their place in South Africa. Rainbow Camps comprise a series of transformative workshops that we hope will teach our learners the value of accelerating and participating in South Africa’s process of integration, both at school and in their communities. The learners spend time developing skills of tolerance and understanding, conflict resolution and peace building, and commit time and energy to learning about other cultures, overcoming prejudice and building common ground.
The content of the Rainbow Camps is refined constantly, in line with changes and developments in the broader South African political and social environment.
Rainbow Camps, which take place over four days in the Bains Kloof mountains, are now an established part of the Grade 11 school calendar. For each Rainbow Camp, a diverse cross-section of learners is chosen. Camps are run four times a year, with twenty-four Grade 11 learners taking part each time.
